Karen Cusolito’s powerful Giant Floral Metal Sculpture will tower over people arriving at Autumn Lights this year, outside the garden gate! What an introduction to the festival.
Karen’s art has taken many forms, from painting and mixed media to the large-scale steel sculptures she’s presently developing. Karen finds drawing to be the easiest and most concise form of communication and the human form a rich arena in which to explore and express emotion, intention, and challenge. Much of her work focuses on humanity and the environment and the delicate balance between the two.
Karen studied at Rhode Island School of Design and Massachusetts College of Art. She worked on several public art installations in and around the Boston area before moving to San Francisco in 1996. Since 2009, Karen has been managing American Steel Studios in Oakland, CA, which provides studio and gallery space to over 170 artists and small businesses.
It’s hard to overstate Karen’s contributons to the Oakland art community. An acknowledged leader among local artists, she is orchestrating the donation of steel from the old Bay Bridge to local artists for sculpture and public works of art. She presents some of her huge pieces annually at the Burning Man Festival. She manages the huge American Steel art collective. Her web page:http://karecuso.com/index.html #amsteel-5281″ />
